Blog v Wiki

I would differentiate Blogs vs Wikis by how they are used. A Wiki is something factual while a blog can be pulled from personal experience. We need both of these things in the modern world as they work together too. They both are sources of knowledge for specific topics and are both user generated content.

A wikipedia can be edited by almost anyone depending on their status as an editor, experienced and non-experienced. This gives the editor all the power to edit and improve the content. In recent times, because of false written information, certain pages require to be reviewed if and edit is submitted by a non-experienced user. This helped keep content accurate and up to date. In terms of collaboration, there is an article by New York Times on how a Brooklyn blog helped lead to drug raid. Neighborhoods in Brooklyn have blogs and one in particular had created a posting about drug deals in a driveway nearby which lead to a commenters reply of finding out it was a drug infested house. These posts helped police track down and raid the house. (NYTimes Blogs)

A new use I thought of for Wiki that has not been done yet could be an app being inverted thats like Wikipedia but for things in your immediate area. For example, you can be looking at a statue in a town you have not been to before and using your location a Wiki page will come up for that.

  1. Tyler, this is a good summary of what the two represent as well as how they each function differently. The drug raid is for sure an interesting one! The drug use may certainly not have been discovered without the blogger further emphasizing how powerful these tools can be.
