Social Networking Sites
Facebook is the most popular social networking site statistically speaking. Its user base ranges widely in demographics. The content users choose to share is as diverse as they are, both in long and short form.
Twitter is formatted exclusively in short form content. Users can retweet or quote tweets from their peers, which allows a different kind of commentary to evolve than Facebook might, where all comments are streamlined under one thread. Twitter allows commentary to branch out across the site differently depending upon whom a user is following.
Instagram is more popular among millennials, and its content is focused on visual media as opposed to text being primary on Facebook and twitter. Here, we also see users presenting their posts in “story” formats which disappear after 24 hours. Although Facebook also has this story feature, it is more widely used on instagram.
Finally, tumblr is a blog site where users tend to have an anonymity that is not evident on the other 3 socials discussed here. Blogs may take on the purpose of being strictly an aesthetic outlet, or they may be a place for a user to write their thoughts, feelings or creative ideas. Some users choose to only reblog content they feel fits their aesthetic, while others write to a niche audience on their blog.
